The name "Saukenuk" was taken from local Indian lore, and the word "Paddlers" was chosen because it is used in both kayaking and canoeing. Founded in 1972, the club has about 60 members who like to paddle canoes, river and sea kayaks on flat and white water. The environment, paddling safety and the promotion of the sport are major concerns for the club's members.
